The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get October 31, 2007

It’s the title of a favorite Morrissey song.  It just seems to fit how I’m feeling right now.  The more I want to do, the more I can’t do.  I’m very frustrated right now because my desire to learn and do outweighs all my resources…time, money and creativity.  I feel time is ticking, and I feel this overwhelming urge to push out some finished products, but I keep getting stuck at every angle.  My sleep deprivation isn’t helping either.  I think I will just go lie down, sleep well tonight, for once, lay off etsy and just readjust my focus.

My favorite things October 30, 2007

Here are some more things I’ve been working on. Man, I wish I could master everything NOW! but that takes time. The perfectionist in me wants to wait until then to list more on etsy, but the impulsive in me wants to list NOW! Ah, the conundrum…

dscf0054.jpg Here’s a view of what I did tonight…may not look like much, but it’s a lot. The little circles on the left are going to be a link bracelet. They are a combination of shrink plastic, decoupage and plastic resin.
dscf0058.jpgThis cuff bracelet is my very first attempt at fusing plastic. It actually came out great for my first time. The colorful part is paper. It is has a fresh coat of resin for a clear laquer look. I need more practice.

The Quiz October 27, 2007

I was blog-surfing when I came across this quiz on the loveyoudeer blog. It looked interesting, so I took the quiz…here are my answers.

The Quiz:

Head
1. Does your home support everything you want to do?
No, I’d like to have more cabinet space in my kitchen and a whole room
dedicated to my craft/work.

2. Do you use your home often?
All the time.

3. Is there room for everything you want to do in your home?

No, I need a craft/work room

4. Is there a good space for what is most important to you?
Yes, all the absolute necessities

Heart

5. Do you consider your home beautiful?
It’s ok, but I wish for lighter (or better yet, no) carpet
maybe some paint on the walls.

6. Do you feel you have a sense of style?
Yes, now if only I could afford to express it more…

7. Does your clothing express your style?

Somewhat. I have some articles of clothing that should never been seen outside of home, but do occasionally find their way out.

8. Does your home express your style?
Somewhat…again, I can’t paint (renting) and I don’t have all the space I want.

Breath

9. Do you consider your home comfortable?

Yes, for the most part. Hopefully it won’t be uncontrollably cold in the winter like our old place.

10. Do you sleep well at night?
No…I haven’t had a good nights rest in the 7 years I’ve been a mother, lol.

11. Is your apartment organized?
Somewhat, but I have issues with following up on my organization.
(i.e, putting stuff back where they belong). I think that’s the
sign of a creative mind though, as opposed to a character flaw.

12. Is it easy to clean and declutter?

Yes, it actually is. I’m doing better in this new place.

Bones

13. Do you consider your home to be in good shape?
It’s ok…no major problems, but I think it was fixed up just enough to rent.

14. Is everything in good working order?
For the most part. I have a big gaping hole in my kitchen ceiling that my landlord is yet to fix…it’s even got a beer can hanging out of it that looks like it’s going to fall on us any minute.

15. Do you take care of repairs quickly?
No. I hate calling on the landlord

16. Do you clean your home often?
Not as often as I should, but I don’t let it get nasty.

What to finish cleaning today:

Living room: Vacuum, put things back in their proper home.

Kitchen: Sweep and mop the floor, slight tidying up.

Bathroom: Clean toilet, sink, tub and floor. Straighten up.

Hallway: vacuum.
Bedroom: change sheets, put clothes away.

Things that need fixed around the house:
Said big gaping hole in the kitchen ceiling. Possibly the leak from the bathroom that caused it.

I’ve rearranged again…
After using my crafting area for the past few weeks, I could see that the system wasn’t working. I needed more work surface, especially separate from the storage area so I did some rearranging, and the results are below. I still need more space, but this will have to do for now. It’s a short term solution to a long-term problem but it’s all I can afford right now.

Blog-Jelousy October 25, 2007

Filed under: Being Philosophical — thraftychic @ 5:41 pm

I’ve always wanted to have one of those cleanly designed blogs where all the pics look professionally taken, but my pics just never come out that way.  What is the answer (besides the obvious: get a professional photog)?  I don’t know how to colour correct, nor do I have time to learn.  I even got a couple of photoshop books on the subject, but I’m still coming up short.

There’s my rant for the day.

here’s some pics of what I’ve been up to.

The earrings in the middle I call my “Cleopatra Jones” earrings. That and the one below it (on left) are from the ‘adinkra’ collection. The pendant is a black ballerina

This is my attempt at image xfer and resin coating. The image to the back came out much better, thanks to printing on a transparency instead of paper.

New Happenings October 19, 2007

Hi Y’all!

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks. I’ve surrendered myself to total craftiness, so I’ve been exploring and learning new techniques and media. That’s why I haven’t blogged. I don’t have any pics, but as soon as I have something pic-worthy, I’ll put some up. I’ve completely fallen in love with resin and polymer clay. Previously, I’d never even heard of resin, and when I thought of polymer clay I thought of those (to me) hideous millefiore beads. I take it back, they’re not hideous, just not my style. I saw some really cool resin pieces on etsy and I just had to learn more, and of course jump in with both feet. In addition to that, I am getting totally into image transfer. I was really intrigued with the idea of caulk transfer, but it hasn’t worked for me so far. The heat transfer is working for me though. Also, I learned about fused shopping bag jewelry…yes, you heard right! This artist in the UK is doing some really amazing things with it. Of course it’s going to take me some time to perfect it, but I’m fascinated anyway.

I am combining all this into some very interesting products. I get frustrated because my interests, curiousity, and imagination far exceed my time and money. I want to hit the craft show circuit, like, Yesteday, but supplies cost money. I’ve got champagne tastes on a beer budget. It’s so hard for me to focus on just doing the one thing to make money, when I want to just be artistic. ‘Tis the never ending dilemma.

Stay tuned for my upcoming etsy store, and pics!

ThraftyChic has done it again… September 29, 2007

Here’s what I’ve been up to: Totally revamped my crafting/working area. Since I refuse to paint at the new place (trying not to get too comfortable so as to keep my eyes on the prize) I’m introducing color with accessories and painted furniture. I am totally digging the new crafting area…till the next episode.

You heard it here first…It is my dream to write an e-book of all my exploits, so be on the lookout.

These are eventually going on Etsy one day…along with everything else I’ve been making. They are Adinkra symbol magnets. Look up Adinkra symbols if you don’t know what they are.

Help, I can’t stop making lampshades! September 19, 2007

Filed under: Done — thraftychic @ 1:13 am

Here’s my first attempt at making a boy-themed object. I’ll try not to make it too pretty, though I think it may still be pretty. My lampshade making has improved a thousand fold since I learned a new trick. It’s not completed yet, but here’s what it looks like, deconstructed…but first a little background.

I scored this gi-normous lampshade at a hotel liquidators store for .50 cents. At first I was just going to cover it, but a) I felt it was to big, and b) it was going to be a pain to cover with the conical shape, so I ripped it apart. I am putting it back together with just one ring on top. I hope that works…if not I can always get a bottom ring from wally-world.
